Les Privat Sidoarjo is going to talk about gerund here. Do you know what is gerund ? when we use a gerund ? if you don’t, we are going to tell you about it right now.
A gerund is a noun made from a verb by adding “-ing.” The gerund form of the verb “read” is “reading.” You can use a gerund as the subject, the complement, or the object of a sentence.
Examples:
- Reading helps me learn English. subject of sentence
- His favorite hobby is reading. complement of sentence
- She enjoys reading. object of sentence
Every gerund, without exception, ends in ing. Gerunds are not, however, all that easy to identify. The problem is that all present participles also end in ing. What is the difference?
Example 1: PLAYING is fun. Playing is used as a noun, subject of the verb is. (gerund)
Example 2: I love singing. playing is a noun used as direct object of the verb like. (gerund)
Example 3: I think I will give playing a try. Playing is a noun used as indirect object of the verb will give. (gerund)
Example 4: The boy playing in the yard.. Playing is an adjective modifying the boy. (participle)
Example5: The playing instructor was an excellent teacher. Playing is an adjective modifying instructor. (participle)
I hope this helps!!
